This is a proto-cuneiform economic tablet from the Uruk period (roughly 3100–2900 BCE), one of humanity's earliest writing systems, used to track goods rather than tell stories. As preserved it seems to record quantities of vessels or containers, a reference to date palms, the city of Zabalam, and — in its final surviving line — a high official, a journey or road allotment, a day-marker, and a cow. It reads less like a narrative and more like a ledger entry: numbers next to commodity and place signs, the bookkeeping of an early Mesopotamian institution.
