This is a tiny, badly broken fragment of a proto-cuneiform administrative tablet from the Uruk period (roughly the later 4th millennium BCE), likely from the Umma region. What survives are numeral notations paired with a barley sign and a possible vessel sign — the bare bones of a grain-accounting record, the kind of tally a temple or institutional household kept to track quantities of barley and containers. So little of the text survives that its exact transaction (a delivery, a ration, a storage entry) cannot be reconstructed; it stands as a small witness to the very earliest bureaucratic writing system in Mesopotamia.
