About this tablet
An accounting tablet from Susa in southwestern Iran, written around 3100–2900 BCE in proto-Elamite — a script that has never been deciphered. Each line pairs a sign standing for some commodity, person, or institution with a quantity, some of them large (one entry may record a thousand units). We can read the numbers with fair confidence, but not what was being counted: it is a ledger whose arithmetic survives while its subject matter remains locked away. Tablets like this are among the earliest written records from Iran, showing a bookkeeping system parallel to, but distinct from, that of Mesopotamia.

This is a bookkeeping list, one item per line, each with a count attached. The first readable entries run roughly: an unknown item, about 300 units (the sign for what it was is broken); another item, 30; a third, perhaps 1,000 — the largest figure on the tablet. Then smaller amounts: 2, 10, 3, 20, 6, and 1 of various other goods or accounts we can no longer identify. After a damaged stretch, the list resumes with single units of two items, then closes with three large tallies of 200, 200, and 100. What exactly was counted — grain, animals, labor, rations — the undeciphered script does not tell us.
