About this tablet
A proto-Elamite administrative tablet from Susa, in southwestern Iran, written around 3100–2900 BCE in one of the world's earliest — and still undeciphered — writing systems. It is a bookkeeping account: a series of entries, each pairing a sign (probably naming a person, institution, or commodity) with a counted quantity, closed by a grand total. Because proto-Elamite has never been cracked, we can read the numbers with confidence but not what was being counted — a vivid reminder that accounting, not literature, drove the invention of writing.

This is a ledger with a running list of entries and a total at the end. Several parties or commodities — recorded with signs we can no longer read — are each credited with a quantity: one gets 3 units, another 5, another 5, two more entries of 5 each, and a final entry of 10. Two or three entries at the top are too broken to read their amounts. At the bottom the accountant added everything up and wrote the sum as one unit of the next-higher counting order. In short: a routine tally sheet from an ancient warehouse or estate office, with the goods column now illegible but the arithmetic still intact.
