SAA 08 098. Fog (RMA 251) [weather]
Translation — scholar edition
SAA 8(1) If a fog rolls in Shebat (XI): eclipse of the land of the Kassites. (3) If there is fog in the land: plenty for the people. (4) If fog lasts in the land: the land's dynasty will rule the world. (5) If a fog rolls on the day of the city god: (this) is not written down; this is a propitious fog, it is not considered bad. (7) This night a star stood [in] the head of Scorpius in front of the moon. The omen from it does not portend anything (bad), it will not be excerpted at all. (r 4) If the Obsidian star (and) Antares, which stand in the br[east] of Sc[orpius, s]tood in front of the moon, this is a normal sign. (r 8) Let them intercalate a month; all the stars of the sky have fallen behind. Adar (XII) must not pass unfavorably; let them intercalate!

Whatever its purpose, this single tablet shows that Babylonian mathematicians, working in base-60, had an arithmetic understanding of right triangles a millennium before Pythagoras was born.
The single most important literary discovery of the 19th century. It rewired the understanding of the Bible's literary context and proved that the Mesopotamian flood tradition is older. It is the oldest surviving epic poetry in human history.
The literary tradition is no longer anonymous from this point. Authorship — the idea that a specific human voice composes a specific work — enters the historical record with her.
